The family of a former Roanoke Rapids High School Exceptional Children’s teacher has donated $10,000 to the program.
Jim Allen presented a check Wednesday morning to the “Life Skills Driving Forward Towards Success fundraiser” in memory of his wife Margo, who worked for the district before retiring in 2000.
“We are so thankful for this donation. We’re hoping to use the money to purchase a vehicle to provide additional field trips and to expand educational opportunities our students,” said April Whitehead, RRHS Exceptional Children’s Teacher. Whitehead has been working with 2nd Street Lunch in Roanoke Rapids for more than two years to expose her students to jobs in the food service industry. “Our goal is to have the students gain job skills through various places of employment prior to graduation and to create more awareness throughout the community.”
This was part of Margo Allen’s dream prior to her death last year. The family has also established a scholarship fund in her memory. Allen said when presenting the check that his wife’s dream was to exposure students with special needs to the community.
