The RRGSD Foundation awarded more than $3000 Tuesday night to the Roanoke Rapids High School music department for the purchase of six keyboards. The money is part of an endowment established by Mac Newsom to support the arts within the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.
“I established this endowment because the arts mean so much to me. When I was a student at Roanoke Rapids High School many years ago I remember singing in the Glee Club and being part of the stage plays. As funding for the arts has been cut across the country, I wanted to do something to keep the arts active in our schools. I’m hoping others will join me by contributing to this endowment,” Newsom said.
Newsom established a $100,000 endowment with scholarships being presented yearly to a deserving art programs within the district.
RRHS Music teacher Denise Hackeburg played one of the new keyboards at a reception prior to the board's monthly meeting.
"This is great for my students," said Hackenburg. "They will be excited when they return."
