The Chaloner KidWind team won the State KidWind Renewable Energy Challenge for the State of Virginia on Saturday landing them a spot in the national competition next month in Texas. The team has been invited to compete on May 16-19 in San Antonio, Texas.
The students who call themselves the “Wind Breakers” have been meeting after school, during lunch, and other times to come up with a wind turbine that would generate enough energy to power a lightbulb using some basic household items.
Earlier this month they presented their wind turbine prototype at The Center of Energy Education in Roanoke Rapids as part of the Kid Wind Renewable Energy Challenge.
With the United States moving toward renewable energy, the challenges help prepare students for jobs in the industry.
