The ladies of the Kappa Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc will be hosting the Twentieth Biennial Debutante Ball this weekend in Roanoke Rapids. The Ball will be held at Kirkwood Adams Community Center on Saturday, December 9, 2017 beginning at 6PM. The public is invited to attend.
The Debutante Ball is a scholarship fund raiser for junior and senior high school young ladies. The Debutantes will have in addition to receiving funds to further their education post high school an opportunity to win awards for academic excellence and congeniality. During the Debutante Season (6 months) the young ladies have been involved in workshops related to interviewing skills, financial fitness, physical fitness and etiquette. They also have been involved in civic, inspirational and cultural activities.
Two RRHS students will serve as Junior Marshals this year. These are young men who are peers of the Debutantes. The Junior Marshals are selected by the Debutantes and are to be young men with high standards and moral character. Byran Hunter who is a junior at RRHS and senior Daraj Watson were selected to serve.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. was established at Howard University in Washington, DC, January 15, 1908 and marked the beginning of Greek letter organizations among Negro college women. To date there are almost 200,000 Alpha Kappa Alpha women world-wide. Our mission is to serve mankind. The Kappa Iota Omega Chapter was established June 29, 1974 and has worked tirelessly in the Roanoke Valley area to serve mankind.
