Sports Restart

The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night during its work session to allow skills workouts to resume beginning October 19 for high school students.  The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has allowed individual workouts since June 15.  Seventy percent of traditional high schools in North Carolina have restarted some form of individual skills workout, including schools in plan C.

“We will meet with our coaches to make sure all of the required state mandated procedures are followed,” Tom Davis, Executive Director of Student Services.

The restart plan follows COVID-19 procedures set forth in Governor Cooper’s executive order and include limitations on the number of people permitted per workout, screening procedures, social distancing, and procedures for reporting positive or presumptive cases.

The Board also discussed the Superintendent’s recommendation for secondary reentry under Plan B.  One scenario would have 6-12 on a staggered schedule over the next few weeks with an additional option for grades 9-12 to come back for Jacket Time.

November 2:  Grade 6 begins in Plan B; optional Jacket time for grades 9-12 begins

November 9:  Grade 7 begins in Plan B

November 16:  Grade 8 begins in Plan B

November 30:  Grades 9-12 begin in Plan B

Based on board feedback, staff was instructed to bring back an updated Superintendent’s recommendation for a vote at its full Board meeting Tuesday, Oct 20 at 6 p.m.  Meanwhile, grades 3-5 will return next Tuesday, Oct 20 as planned.  The district allowed Pre-K, Kindergarten, and grades 1 and 2 to return earlier this month.
