Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Pre-K through fifth grade students will be returning to class beginning October 5, 2020.
The Board of Trustees approved a recommendation Tuesday night from Superintendent Dr. Dain Butler, which brings back Pre-K-5 students five days a week. Grade Pre-K and Kindergarten will return October 5, grades 1-2 October 12, and grades 3-5 October 20.
“This phased approach will help both our parents and staff adapt to the state mandated daily screenings, increased cleaning and sanitation protocols, and changes in the way our students are served meals,” said Butler.
Students in the lower grades will also continue to have the option of learning remotely.
“Our teachers will continue to serve students both face-to-face and those who choose this option. Additionally, we hope to get our students in grades 6-12 back in our classroom as soon as state restrictions are lifted,” Butler added.
Over the next week, the district will begin communicating to parents new protocols that will be implemented to get students screened and checked-in each morning. Students will be required to wear a district-issued badge which will be used to scan and record daily temperatures as required by the state before boarding the bus or entering our school buildings. The badges will also be scanned for daily meal service.
RRSGD has been and will continue following state guidance and working with the Halifax County Health Department in its response to COVID-19. RRGSD will also continue to use its special state and federal funding to purchase cleaning equipment and supplies to support sanitization and disinfectant efforts at schools. Every school has been provided disinfectant cleaning equipment that can be used daily to disinfect both the air and contact surfaces in all of the classrooms, restrooms, and other common areas.
