The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees swore in a new member at their regularly scheduled board meeting last night. Halifax County Judge Turner Stephenson administered the oath of office to Jeff Kloss, who will complete the term left vacant by the resignation of Tammy Colston. His mother, Janet, held the Bible as Kloss took the oath. His term will go through 2025. Kloss shared, “I look forward to serving on the RRGSD Board of Trustees and consider it an honor to be appointed.”

Frank Coulman was recognized as the 2024 RRGSD EC Teacher of the Year during the Special Recognitions portion of the meeting. Mr. Coulman, an Occupational Therapist in the Exceptional Children’s department, has served students at Manning, Belmont, and Clara Hearne for the past 20 of his 32 years as an OT and he provides therapy to help students develop functional motor and visual perceptual skills to successfully access their educational setting. He leads the district autism evaluation team, and participates in evaluations for children as young as 2 ½ years old and then works with them and their families as they progress through preschool and elementary school. Mr. Coulman builds lasting relationships with students and their families and we are thankful for his commitment to excellence. He will be celebrated during the Annual Conference on Exceptional Children at the Educators of Excellence reception honoring outstanding North Carolina special educators this fall. “I absolutely love working with our students and their families and am grateful to work with my colleagues. I feel the love and support they have for me each and every day,” Mr. Coulman stated. In other board news, Vice Chair Valencia Davis tendered her resignation from the Board, effective October 15, 2024. Mrs. Davis has served on the RRGSD Board of Trustees for the past fourteen years, the last six of those as vice chair.
