School Performance Grades were released yesterday after the State Board of Education meeting, based on the 2023-2024 performance data. Roanoke Rapids Graded School District received the following letter grades for our schools:
Belmont Elementary - D
Manning Elementary - C
Chaloner Middle School - D
Roanoke Rapids High School - C
Roanoke Rapids Early College - A
The student achievement data for the 2023-24 school year is based on analysis of all end-of- grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) tests, which are aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in English Language Arts (Reading) and Mathematics and the Essential Standards in Science for all public schools in North Carolina. The data provides the percentage of students who scored at Level 3 and above (grade-level proficiency), at Level 4 and above (college-and-career readiness) and at each academic achievement level. There are four achievement levels for state testing: not proficient, 3, 4 and 5, with 5 representing the greatest mastery of the subject matter.
Additional highlights of RRGSD’s achievement data include:
Significant increases in ACT and WorkKeys results for both high school campuses.
EL Progress indicators at Belmont, Manning, and RRHS improved, which means that more English Learners are meeting their language proficiency targets.
Four out of the five campuses met or exceeded growth in every single identified subgroup.
Superintendent Julie Thompson stated, "I am very excited to share that Roanoke Rapids Early College and Roanoke Rapids High School have successfully achieved our goal of increasing each school a letter grade each year. I'm also incredibly proud that nearly every school met or exceeded their expected growth! We will continue the work we've started, while pushing for greater academic achievement and ensuring that all of our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Together, we are building a foundation for lasting success across our district.”
In addition to the SPG data, RRGSD’s Early Literacy data for the 23-24 school year showed significant improvements. RRGSD outpaced the state in K-3 literacy growth, in every grade level and identified subgroup, as measured by the DIBELS 8 assessment. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, and measures foundational reading skills such as decoding and fluency.
“We are very proud of the work our pre-K and elementary teachers have done in digging deep into the Science of Reading, and that work is beginning to pay off in our DIBELS 8 scores. While there is much work still to be done across our district, we are confident that our efforts will continue to strengthen and enhance our students’ literacy skills, setting them up for lasting success,” stated Lauren Hinnant, Executive Director of Instructional Services.
